What are Essential Oils, exactly?.
In clinical terms, essential oils are aromatic volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees roots, bushes and seeds.
In simple terms, essential oils are God’s natural medicine.
If you’ve ever spent any time gardening, you know the incredible ability of a plant to harness sunlight, manufacture food, heal itself and generate new growth. It’s not surprising, then, to learn that every plant manufactures its own “medicine”, oil which it uses for its own growth and defense. These oils are essentially the “immune system” of the plant. They contain incredibly complex, highly potent molecular compounds that heal the plant from injury and protect it from pathogenic microorganisms.
Plants are veritable chemical factories, whose medicinal qualities have been documented since the beginning of time. Each plant’s oil is unique, varying in it’s pharmaceutical properties. If the plants are cultivated and distilled properly, the plant oils retain the same therapeutic properties that were present in the plant from which they came. In other words, if it healed or decontaminated the plant, it can heal or decontaminate us.
Plant oils contain hundreds of complex components, and scientists are discovering more every day. Among the most vital components are terpenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones and phenols.
Is it really safe to use essential oils?
In a word, YES!!!!
If you’ve ever savored the aroma of a flower or slathered aloe vera on your sunburn, you’ve experienced pure essential oils. We cook with olive oil and put coconut oil in our smoothies. We add cinnamon and nutmeg to pumpkin pie, oregano and thyme to our spaghetti. Zest of Lemon. Chamomile tea. The list goes on…
We know that essential oils are safe for our bodies, because our bodies are composed of the same basic materials! Because essential oils are the high-grade fuel of the plant, when we take them into our bodies, we are ingesting the best of what the plant has to offer. Better yet, they do not accumulate in the body. We pass these oils through our excretory system with incredible efficiency, typically within a few hours of intake, leaving no toxins behind.
Of course, as with any substance, it’s important to read labels. Not all oils are meant to be ingested. Not all oils are ideal for topical application. Not all oils work for aromatherapy. And special care should always be taken with children or when pregnant.

Why should anyone switch to an essential oil lifestyle?
We are surrounded with scented candles, air fresheners, perfumes, toiletries, cosmetics, cleaning supplies and pharmaceuticals on the market today all use these powerful plant molecules in their products. The major difference is that these products use many other, harmful chemicals as well. Toxic chemicals penetrate through your skin, are inhaled into your lungs, or worse, they enter your unsuspecting system masquerading as a “safe” pharmaceutical.
Unlike chemical cleaners, cosmetics or pharmaceutical drugs, essential oils do not accumulate in the body. Because the oils are organic by nature, our body simply filters them out as naturally as it absorbs them in. They leave no residue, cause no side effects and leave nothing but healing in their wake.
Essential oils can be substituted for almost any product used in the average household today. Every oil is uniquely complex in its chemical composition, so every oil has different effects on the human body. Many constituents (chemical components) in essential oils have therapeutic properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic, sedative, anti-depressant, anti fungal, anti-catarrhal, anti-coagulant, stimulant, to name a few. The synergy of the various constituents in the oils give the body incredible therapeutic benefits without harmful side effects. In the home, oils can made into soaps, facial cleansers, lotions, shampoos, perfumes, toothpaste, insect repellant, shaving cream, sunscreen… phew!
Just think of all the store-bought products (of questionable content) that we unquestioningly apply to the largest organ in our body, our skin! All the chemicals from traditional products are absorbed through the skin, directly into our blood stream. All those carcinogens and toxins add up over time and our body fights harder and harder to expel them. And we wonder why cancer is on the rise!
Instead, we can use nature’s power-packed oils to do all those jobs that chemical products do. Not only do oils work better than synthetics, we will be far healthier in the long run!

Isn’t this oils movement is just a passing fad, like Scented Wax and Chia Pet?
If 6,000 years of recorded history is considered “trendy,” then, yes. Essential oils are a super- hip, ancient fad!
But seriously, modern science has confirmed centuries (no, millenniums,) of practical essential oil application.
Hieroglyphic records from ancient Egypt depict hundreds of oily recipes for everything from beauty regimens to psychiatry, from underarm deodorant to embalming mummies. So precious were these oils to the Egyptians, that great pharaohs’ had their tombs lined with alabaster jars filled to the brim. They couldn’t possibly survive the afterlife without their essential oils! Babylon, India, Persia are all renowned for their plant-derived beauty rituals and aromatic luxuries. Myrrh, cedar wood, cypress, rose…all were used medicinally and cosmetically, just as they are today. Ancient Greeks held oils in such high esteem that they attributed aromatics to the gods, who rode on scented clouds. The Romans used oils extensively in public bath houses and in personal hygiene.
The Bible records the use of oil over 200 times throughout the Old and New Testaments. In Ecclesiastes 38:4 we read,
The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth;
and he that is wise will not abhor them.
While that sums it all up quite neatly, let me give you some specifics. Ancient Hebrews used frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, cinnamon, cassia, spikenard, rosemary and hyssop for anointing and healing the sick. In fact, a blend of these oils, which God directed Moses to burn in a censer, stopped a plague from wiping out all the Israelites. We now know that some of the constituents in cinnamon, are well known to be powerfully antimicrobial, anti-infectuous and anti-bacterial. And then there’s the Christmas story, told in Luke chapter 2, in which the magi presented the Christ child with gifts of not only gold, but frankincense and myrrh, supremely valuable and highly prized essential oils.
In fact, there is hardly a culture on the face of the earth, nor one that has existed since the span of time that hasn’t prized plant oils for their aromatic, medicinal and therapeutic qualities!
Of course, all this makes perfect sense, because God told Adam, in Genesis 1:29 that He gave to mankind every herb and tree on earth to use. It was up to us (man) to unlock the incredible secrets of his marvelous creation. After all, Proverbs 25:2 says,
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing,
but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
The Lord of Heaven gifted Earth to mankind, a marvelous creation whose immeasurable complexity, incomprehensible balance and breathtaking beauty all glorify Him. It goes without saying that the aromatic, medicinal plant- based apothecary is an intentional part of his perfect design.

I’m so confused! What do I do with the oils once my order comes in?
Well, first off, you’re gonna want to read a little bit about what each oil is useful for and how to use it most effectively. Not every oil is good to ingest. Lavender, for example. Smells like heaven. Tastes like… well, not heaven. Of course, that’s my opinion. But I’d rather diffuse it than taste it all day. I’m just sayin’…
A few ways to use oils are
1.Topically. That means apply it to your skin. BUT WAIT!!! Before you go dumping Oregano on your forearm, be sure you know whether your oils is “hot” or not. Straight Oregano can leave a pretty nasty little burn. Diluted in a carrier oil, however, Oregano is one powerful immune stimulator.
Some topical application points are the crown of the head, temples, behind the ears, neck, back, abdomen, soles of feet, or anywhere you need relief from localized pain
2. Aromatically. Simply put, you smell them! Sniff the bottle. Pour a drop on your palms, rub them together and inhale. Use a diffuser. Put a drop on a cotton ball or a damp cloth. Add a fw drops to a steaming bowl of water, lean over the bowl and cover your head (and the bowl) with a towel, like a tent. Breathe deeply.
Inhalation heightens the senses and triggers a desired response within the body.
3. Internally. Because Young Living Oils are therapeutic grade, many of their oils can be taken orally as dietary supplements. Always always always read the labels and consult your reference guide before ingesting any essential oils. And never, Never NEVER ingest a lesser quality brand. If it’s not Young Living Oils, you literally don’t know what kind of synthetics or toxic chemicals you might be swallowing.
Young Living has made it easy to distinguish which oils are safe to ingest by developing their Vitality line of oils. Just look for the white labels to know which oils have been deemed GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) by the Food and Drug Administration.
4. DIY Home and Personal Products- this is the fun part of oiling! Create you own dish soap, laundry detergent, bath salts, kitchen cleaner, face wash… using essential oils and other chemical-free ingredients

I hear people talk about carrier oils. What in the world are they talking about?
A carrier oil is an indispensable and highly flexible tool for applying essential oils to the skin. Basically, a carrier oil is any oil naturally derived from vegetarian sources, and they have a neutral smell. They aren’t volatile like essential oils, which makes them an excellent medium for dilution and application.
Essential oils are volatile, which means they evaporate rapidly and contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant. Believe me when I say that some of these little oils can pack a powerful punch! In their undiluted form (called neat), they can be intense or cause irritation. Add a little carrier oil, and the concentration of EO is reduced while the therapeutic qualities of the oil are not minimized. Carrier oils also prevent excessive application and waste. Contrary to popular belief, LESS is MORE! The millions of micro particles in essential oils will often be more effective when spread over a larger area. The beauty is, while the reaction to an oil may be minimized, the effect of the oil is not depleted in any way.
Young Living offers a V6 carrier (vegetable) oil, which works wonders as a massage oil, and should be used repeatedly on any area where topical application had caused an adverse effect.
* Carrier oils should also be used to flush the eyes in the event oils get into the eye. DO NOT USE WATER to stop a reaction! Water drives the oil in deeper. Only a carrier oil can effectively dilute an essential oil until the reaction stops.
Carrier oils are NOT: Vegetable shortening, butter, and margarine are best left in the kitchen—they’re not intended for topical use. Mineral oil and other petroleum derivatives like petroleum jelly should also not be used as carrier oils.

How on earth can an oil be HOT?
Did you ever eat an Atomic Fireball candy as a kid? If you did, you understand just how HOT cinnamon can be!
Some oils, by their nature, have this “hot” effect. They can produce a burning sensation when applied to the skin, especially in excess. I have a friend who dumped quite a bit of peppermint oil down her hand by accident. An hour later, she went to soak in the bathtub, and the hot water stimulated the oil, causing a burning sensation in her hand. She applied Young Living’s V6 Carrier oil repeatedly to the painful area until the reaction stopped, 10-15 minutes later.
Hot oils are labeled as such in the Young Living reference guide. Some single hot oils are Cinnamon, Clove, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Oregano, Thyme. The oil blends of Thieves and Exodus II are “hot” because they have one or more of these oils as an ingredient.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use hot oils! On the contrary! Peppermint is AMAZING digestive support after a heavy meal. One drop of Thieves under the tongue is super spicy, but it provides incredible relief to ticklish throats. If in doubt, apply oils to the soles of your feet. The skin on the bottom of our feet is the least sensitive but the most efficient way to get oils into the bloodstream. So if in doubt, try your feet first!
