Keep the Pain Away

sleep deskI will never forget that moment. I was sitting in English Lit, my senior year of high school. The teacher was droning on and on, something about Virginia Woolf. All I could think about was my overwhelming desire to lie, face down on the floor and relieve the pain in my back. Shortly after class, my legs simply gave out. I’m sure it was quite a sight as I collapsed against my locker just as the bell rang for fifth period. My heroic boyfriend wrapped me in his letter jacket, carried me to his car and drove me home. I think he even brought me flowers, because, apparently, he thought I was dying. I couldn’t walk for three days. After endless hours of laying on a heating pad, I was suddenly right as rain.

It was as if nothing had ever happened.

hay baleUntil it happened again.

And then… again.

Granted, I wasn’t exactly responsible with my teenage body. What teenager is? Besides eating junk food, staying up late and drinking copious amounts of beer (underage,) I spent a lot of time riding horses and working hard in the barn. I remember my father chastising me not to lift the massive hay bales over my head, Much stallsor shovel such heavy loads of manure. “Bend at your knees, not at the waist!” he would say. But I was young and strong. What did I care if my back would plague me when I was old? That was then. THIS is now. Like all teenagers I was invincible. And I never though I would age…

Now I have aged… relatively speaking.

And my back flares up just like it did when I was sixteen. Only now there’s no one to carry me home and put me to bed. No one to call in sick for me. No one to homeschool my kids for me. Or drive them to basketball. Or make dinner. Or do the laundry… you get the picture. It isn’t pretty.

I distinctly remember the day when I realized something in my life had to change. I was plowing through Ibuprofen like it was candy. Motrin and Advil had become my daily vitamins. Sometimes it was morning pain. Sometimes it was before bed. But it was some time every day. And I hadn’t even turned forty yet.

God is good like that. He allows us to come to our own realizations first, and then He steps in with the answers we need. Usually, those answers were there all along, we just hadn’t figured out that there was a bed

First, a college friend of mine called me to catch up. She told me about her dad, in the hospital with kidney failure. The best the doctors could tell, he had taken too much ibuprofen over the span of his life. That scared me. A lot.

wheat foodThen another friend (a doctor) shared with me some research she had done with regards to gluten being a trigger for inflammation. I didn’t need to hear anything more.

I went home and tossed all our bread, pasta, bagels, Thomas’ English Muffins… clearly I was desperate!

Over the next few months, I noticed I didn’t need my daily dose of Vitamin M (Motrin). The inflammation has significantly subsided. Not only that, but my energy was restored and my foggy head was cleared. I had no idea wheat had become such a personal toxin. Eventually, I hardly needed anti-inflammatories at all. At least not for those day-to-day aches and pains. It was almost miraculous how much better I felt. Younger. Stronger.

gardening_back_painBut I still have flare ups. When I spend too many hours bent over, gardening. Sometimes it’s after vigorously washing the car (ok, so that’s rare) Once, my back went out after an evening in high heels!!! OK, that’s pretty sad.

And there I would be, popping meds for pain, picturing my friend’s dad in his hospital bed.

Panaway bottleThen I was introduced to Pan Away through my Young Living Premier Kit. It comes in a funny looking bottle- with a child-proof cap, like from the pharmacy. When my lower back flared needed support, instead of reaching for a pill bottle, I massaged a few drops of PanAway onto my lower spine with my fingertips, “just to see what it would do,” if anything.

Keep in mind, I was completely skeptical. After all, how could this spicy mixture of peppermint, clove, helichrysum and wintergreen actually bring support?

No less than five minutes later, I understood the power of essential oils. Not only was my back comfortable, it felt GREAT! I felt, somehow, refreshed! Strengthened!

eodr1What IS this magical potion, anyways???

To satisfy my curiosity, I took the plunge and ordered “Big Blue,” my Essential Oils Desk Reference. And I started reading everything I could get my hands on about the power of plants for healing. Here’s a snippet of what I’ve learned:

PanAway works wonders for joint support because of the special properties of it’s four ingredients

Helichrysum italicum-277x277

Helichrysum – has been researched in Europe as aid in promoting tissue and nerve regeneration, as well as providing circulatory support. It has been used in France for many things, particularly and spine support. Helichrysum is well known for its restorative qualities that ease every day wear and tear on the body

WintergreenWintergreen/ Birch – has a soothing activity that is beneficial for bone, joint and muscle support. It is known for its properties associates with muscle, bone and joint wellness.

CLoveClove – is a powerhouse of oils that has been used for thousands of years in countless indigenous cultures to treat a wide variety of issues.  Overall, clove is very stimulating, has a strong therapeutic effect helps influence healing.

PeppermintPeppermint – has powerful soothing properties because of it’s main constituent, menthol. It has a tremendous soothing and cooling effect. For centuries, peppermint has been used to aid digestive comfort, and now they are discovering its value in promoting comfort throughout the body- muscles, joints, skin, bones… A 1994 study in Germany found that peppermint oil exerts significant therapeutic effects on patients.

In this unique blend, the individual oils work in unity with each other to not merely ease discomfort, but to stimulate healing. I’ve personally discovered that PanAway not only offers immediate comfort, it helps promote a continuing comfort level into the future. No man-made pharmaceutical has that kind of power. Period. Standard over-the-counter drugs may dull the discomfort, but they certainly have ZERO healing powers! I was taking over-the-counter meds as a daily regimen, with no end in sight. In stark contrast, the more I’ve used PanAway, the less often I’ve needed it. In fact, after six months of relatively infrequent use, I almost NEVER need joint support!!!

Someday, I honestly think I won’t need PanAway at all. I am absolutely blown away and in awe of the HEALING power of essentials oils.

Aptly named, PanAway truly, TRULY keeps the pan away.

Kicking Kankers to the Kurb

So, I was sitting at a girlfriend’s house, sipping hot cocoa and chatting when all of a

canker sore
Cankers are painful mouth ulcers

sudden, a ferocious canker sore erupted inside my lower lip. I have no words to describe it. One moment I had a happy mouth. The next moment, I was biting my lip in agony. I’ve never experienced anything quite like it before! And I’m not really certain what triggered it- perhaps the cocoa? Or something on the mug? I haven’t had a canker sore since college, and (trust me) that was a looooooooong time ago. So canker sores are not something I deal with regularly.

eodr1Upon returning home, I immediately ran to Big Blue (my essential oils Bible) and looked up the best remedy to help my searing lip. But wouldn’t you know it, I had just lent the oils it recommended to a friend. Now what could I do?

Never fear, Big Blue always has a back up plan. This time it called for a blend called Purification (it comes in the starter kit)

Purification bottleOne thing you must understand. Up to this point, although I have an obsession with essential oils and have gathered a small collection, I certainly do NOT know everything there is to know about each oil. My only experience with Purification thus far had been as a freshener in my laundry and a room deodorizer. Yummmmmmm, it smells soooooo good! But Purification as medicine? I simply had never tried.

So I read in Big Blue about this blend, and this is what it told me. The blend of oils in Purification- Citronella, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Melaluca (tea tree oil) Lavendin and Myrtle- have powerful therapeutic properties. Basically, Purification is wonderful for promoting healing in wounds and cuts. Of all those ingredients,Lavendin and Melaluca, are know for encouraging a strong  immuno-response and they help promote tissue regeneration. I can’t think of anything better to use! So I gave it a whirl.

I put a dab on my fingertip and held it on my lip for about thirty seconds. I could feel the stimulating sizzle of cells springing into action (Nice alliteration, electric celleh?) Maybe I’m a bit odd, but although it stung ever so slightly, it was a positive, healing sensation. The energized cells felt a bit like this electric globe. I repeated this “purification procedure” again before bed, and when I woke up in the morning, the surface of the ulcer had totally healed over. Amazing! I remember those college days when nasty (beer-induced) canker sores disrupted my life for days, if not weeks! Commercially available tubes of (insert brand name here) did virtually nothing to help heal my canker (although it did numb the pain) but essential oils Kicked this Kanker in less than 24 hours. UNBELIEVABLE!

I’m so excited to discover more about this versatile oil that I have long neglected. In fact, I will probably put it in my emergency care kit because it works SO WELL.

Banish the Evil Eye

I keep telling myself, “Next time I will take a picture!” And of course, I don’t do it, because who really likes the “before” pictures, when all we want is to see the “after.”

nose capillaryBut I did search the web and found someone else’s “before” pictures that look very much like my own. Please note, THIS IS NOT MY NOSE! However, this is is an excellent example of what broken capillaries on the nose look like.

Do you see those red veins running all over the place? Yeah. I had that.

The lines just appeared one day. At first they were faint.  Then the little red spiderweb began to grow. And grow. And grow quickly. And unlike this lucky gentleman, (or lady?) I was not so fortunate as to have the red sprawl discretely placed on the side of my nose.

Oooooh noooo. sauronThis puppy was right on the top of my nose, smack between my eyes. To tell the truth, it really looked more like the evil (third) eye of  Sauron. All red and flaming and staring out from my face like a beacon. Yeah. It was that bad.

And everyone kept telling me, “Frankincense! Frankincense cures everything from age spots, to dark circles, to wounds that won’t heal…” so I applied Frankincense like it would earn me a place in heaven. Now don’t get me wrong, Frankincense has it’s place. And I absolutely LOVE it! But for whatever reason, it was not the solution to the evil eye.

Then one night, EO desk referenceI was reading my beloved Desktop Reference (Yes. I am a geek and I actually read this thing at night for fun!) about the behavior of Geranium. I had randomly purchased Geranium for no other reason than it’s my favorite flower in the garden. I LOVE the smell when I snap off their leaves. Come to find out, the essential oil is not the same as the garden flower… but I digress.

geranium flowerAnyhoo,  I was reading up on Geranium- how it supports healthy sirculation, encourages revitalization of skin tissue and generally promotes healthy skin. On a whim, I applied dab of it to the evil eye several times that day. When I woke up the next morning, the evil eye was gone. Well, nearly gone. It certainly looked far less evil… friendly, even! Five days later, the glaring red spiderweb had completely disappeared.

capillary brokenFor six long months that unsightly blemish had been mocking me in the mirror, trumpeting my true age. After 30 days of commercial treatment, it taunted me all the more. I could almost hear its maniacal laughter. “You think you can defeat me? NOTHING can defeat me! Bwahahaha!”  So I pulled out the big guns. Bang! Geranium. Bang! Bang! Five days later, NOW who’s laughing???

Again, THIS IS NOT MY BEFORE AND AFTER. But this is exactly what my nose looked like (only worse). Both before, and after. I was positively floored by this little flower’s power.

So now I am head over heels for Geranium. Be forewarned, it has a strong floral scent. And it’s also very powerful. If you apply it neat (undiluted) to your face, expect a significant tingling sensation. If you apply it around your nose, expect to feel a bit overwhelmed by the aroma. If you dilute it in a carrier oil, it is absolutely magical!

geranium oil choiceNeed circulatory support? I always have cold feet when I’m crawling into bed at night. Now I mix a drop of geranium with some coconut oil and rub it onto my feet before I sleep. Ahhhhh. No more wearing my husband’s socks to bed. Not to mention, geranium is well documented to be emotionally uplifting and helps decrease tension and stress. Another bedtime bonus!  :)

Last but definitely not least, I’ve learned that geranium is excellent for encouraging skin elasticity, so I’m currently using it for wrinkle treatment around my eyes. Again, I really need to take a “before picture…” of these crows feet on my face, because they are almost as lovely as the evil eye.

But, as much as I love the idea of capturing my imperfections on film (thus archiving them for time immemorial,) and publishing them for all the world to see, I’m a little busy today. Maybe I’ll do it tomorrow. If I still have any wrinkles left, that is!
