Patchouli – Young Living

🌸 FUN FACTS 🌸

Derived from a large evergreen perennial, and related to the lavender and sage family, Patchouli has been prized for centuries for healing and beautifying the skin. The oil originated in southeast Asia and is extracted from the plant’s lightly fragrant leaves and the white, violet-marked flowers. Countless generations across the globe have used patchouli for a wide variety of needs. In ancient Rome, Romans, it was used to stimulate the appetite. In Egypt, King Tut arranged to have gallons of patchouli oil buried with him in his tomb. In Asia, people used it extensively for medicinal purposes- everything from treating skin bites to soothing headaches.

Nowadays, patchouli oil is used as a fragrance in skin and personal care products, potpourri, insect repellents, detergents and incense. Interestingly enough, patchouli is a major component of the fragrance industry, because it acts like a fine wine and it’s aroma gets better (and changes) with age!

🌸 WHAT IT DOES 🌸

Patchouli has a distinct floral and musky aroma which has somewhat of an acquired taste. However, many people who do not love its fragrance dat first, grow to love it as they experience its healing benefits, both to body and mind. Emotionally, patchouli oil is said to help relieve anxiety, stress and depression because of the impact it has on our hormones: Patchouli encourages the release of serotonin and dopamine, hormones that ease feelings of anger, anxiety and anxiousness. This is one reason why patchouli is often diffused (or incense burned) during prayer- it creates an atmosphere of tranquility.

Hormonally, patchouli also has the power to stimulate the libido and has been used as an aphrodisiac for centuries. It has also been proven effective for helping partners maintain physical ability during intimacy

Patchouli also stimulated muscle contractions (as opposed to other oils which do the reverse) so it aids skin and hair, stimulating the hair follicles and tightening the skin. It also is incredibly moisturizing and helps to encourage new cell growth, keeping the skin young and healthy. It works well on all skin types, whether dry or oils, to promote balance, so it’s a great oil for the scalp and the face.

Patchouli also is beneficial to the liver, stomach and intestines and it helps your body to process food and absorb nutrients effectively. It also acts as a stimulant to the bladder, increasing urination, helping your body to expel toxins effectively- this is beneficial to the gallbladder, liver and kidneys, which are the body’s filtration system. This oils is known as a toxins- digestor for the body.

At night, patchouli is extremely calming to the nervous system and the mind, so many people use it to promote a restful night sleep.

Another beautiful thing about patchouli is that bugs don’t tend to like it, so take your patchouli outdoors, when camping, or sitting on your porch. Many people add it to their laundry detergent or dryer balls as a natural shield against unwanted fly-bys.

Angelica

ANGELICA graphic

Angelica- Young Living

🦋 FUN FACTS 🦋

This plant rows wild in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland, mostly in the northern parts of the countries, but it is cultivated mostly in France.  Angelica is from the parsley family, but don’t let that deter you. Legend has it that this oil got its name from an old monk’s tale in which an angel revealed this plant for healing during the plague.   It goes by many names, including the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit Root, Archangel Root and Oil of Angels, probably because its healing powers were so great that the origin must have only been from a Divine Source. History also records its usage during the plague of 1660. People chewed the plant stems to ward off infection, and the seed and roots were used to purify the air. In Germany, this oil is known as the “essence of the Angels.”

🦋 WHAT IT DOES 🦋

While Angelica’s primary use is for cooling,  Energetically, this essential oil assists the user to be open to the angelic realm, source energy and higher self and has a history of aromatherapy use towards combating stress, exhaustion and anxiety. Because Angelica is both a relaxant and a stimulant at the same time, it soothes the nerves while simultaneously encouraging alertness. This is a wonderful oil to use for mental focus.

Medicinally, this oil helps promote calmness in the face of spasms- involuntary and unpredictable contractions of the respiratory tracts, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and internal organs. Often times the only way out is to induce relaxation in the affected parts, which Young Living’s Essential Oil of Angelica is able to do. This relaxing effect is beneficial in driving out gas from the intestines as well- as the abdominal and intestinal walls relax, the gas can more easily pass through. It also stimulated the production of bile and gastric juices, so Angelica supports healthy gas levels and digestive comfort.

Angelica also helps to promote urination and sweating, which aids the body in detoxification. In addition, this oil is wonderful for supporting healthy liver function; Detox of the body through urinary, sweat and liver processes help to boost the immune system . As the body gets rid of undesirable materials, it grows stronger in the “fight.”

Angelica also works to support the bronchial passages, sinuses and generally encourages ease of respiration.

In contrary to its behavior as a relaxant, it is a stimulant for the systems functioning inside the body. It stimulates blood circulation, the secretion of hormones, enzymes, and other juices, and also stimulates metabolic processes, including digestion, absorption, and excretion. This attribute, in total, stimulates healthy growth.

FAQ: Purpose of a Carrier Oil

seed oil

Q: What is the Purpose of a Carrier Oil?

A : A carrier oil is a fatty oil produced in the seed of the plant.

This fatty oil is loaded with nutrients and is metabolized during a seedling’s germination- before the young shoot pokes its head above the soil to harness the sunlight and produce it’s own food (photosynthesis,) the baby plant must survive off the fatty oil inside the seed.

seed germination

We know these oils primarily as kitchen oils, such as olive oil, avacado oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil almond oil, etc. These fatty oils are NOT essential oils because they serve an entirely different purpose in the life of the plant. Carrier oils, or seed oils, are  the plant’s way of providing “food” and ensuring the survival of future generations. Essential oils are actually manufactured INSIDE the plant, for all the plant’s current needs.

But what do carrier oils DO? And why do you hear so much about them in the world of essential oils?

In short, Carrier Oils CARRY OILS. I know, shocker right? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Let me explain :)

Carrier oils are, in a sense, a way of diluting an essential oil. You probably remember from elementary school science that oil and water don’t mix. But oils blend delightfully with other oils (lipids with lipids) so we use a carrier oil to “stretch” or dilute an essential oil.  There are many reasons why we would want to do this.

  1. Essential oils are extremely concentrated and incredibly POWERFUL. Some oils are so powerful, in fact, that one drop can cause a reaction on sensitive skin. Take Oregano, for example. Oregano works wonders for the immune system, respiratory system, muscles and bones… but we don’t want to go slathering ourselves with pure Oregano oil, or things will get mighty uncomfortable… REAL FAST! But we do want to harness the power of this oil, so we dilute it with a carrier. One drop of Oregano in a 1/4 tsp of carrier should do the trick- the dilution ratios are up to you.
  2. Essential oil drops are SMALL! Let’s say you’ve had an amazing arm workout at the gym… a little TOO amazing (if you catch my drift) and you are needing a little PanAway or Peppermint to help those overworked arms feel less like undercooked spaghetti. Add a few drops f essential oil to a carrier and VOILA, you’ve made a virtual  massage oil that will ease your achs and pans (👈see what I did there?) Basically, a carrier oil allows you to increase the surface area (the spread) of an oil over a larger area without draining your entire PanAway bottle!
  3. On that note, Carrier oils are UH-MAZING massage oils… just add in your favorite EO and you’re whisked away to cloud 9
  4. Carrier Oils help dilute oils taken internally. Yes, you heard me right- Young Living has an entire line of oils (called Vitality) that are safe for ingestion. While you can place a drop in your water or a drop under the tongue, many YL members love to make veggie capsules with their oils. By adding a carrier oil, you will decrease the chance of an oil hitting your stomach and feeling too “strong,” Sometimes our systems can be sensitive to essential oils, especially if we are new to ingesting them. Remember, EOs are suuuuuuuuuuper concentrated! One drop of Lemon is the equivalent of 70 lemon rinds! Fatty oils help “soften the blow” to our digestive tract and ease the metabolic process.
  5. Carrier oils help ease any contact sensitization. If you ever apply an oil topically and feel discomfort, simply start applying a carrier oil over that area and massage until the sensitivity goes away. This is really just another form of dilution. Also, if you accidentally get essential oils in the eyes, rinse your eye with CARRIER OIL (not water!) The fatty oil will literally “carry” the essential oil away. Water would drive the oil in deeper.
  6. Roller Balls-  when you want to make your oils stretch further, place several drops of your favorite EO into a rollerball and fill the rest up with a liquid carrier oil (coconut hardens at room temperature) Roller Balls are an easy and convenient way to carry oils with you and apply on the go.

** One small note- just because you are diluting the essential oil does NOT mean you are diluting its therapeutic effect!!! Those tiny oil molecules will enter your body and get to work just the same as if the oil was applied at full concentration. The ONLY difference is that the effect on the skin won’t feel as intense. That’s the beautiful thing about using a carrier- the oils will get busy working and you won’t even notice they are there! 👊

These are the main uses for a carrier oil. Young Living had a WONDERFUL blend of fatty oils called V-6. It has a very neutral smell, and is not greasy. I highly recommend it as you start your oils journey. Of course, you will also want to experiment with your favorite carrier- I happen to LOVE coconut oil!!! So have fun, experiment and find out which carrier works best for you!

Myrrh

MYRRH graphic

Myrrh – Young Living

🏺FUN FACTS🏺

Well over 2,000 years before the baby Jesus received Myrrh as a gift, it was one of the most desired and most expensive items in the world. In Greek mythology, Aphrodite forced the goddess Myrrha into an incestuous relationship with her father, Cinyras. Cinyras avenged the act by turning his daughter into a Myrrh tree. When the tree sprouted its blooms, their child Adonis was born. The resinous drops that exude from cuts in the trees bark were said to be Myrrha’s  healing tears. For this reason, the Greeks and Romans used Myrrh to dress their battle wounds.

Myrrh oil has a smoky, sweet or sometimes bitter smell. The word myrrh comes from the Arabic word “murr” meaning bitter. The oil is a yellowish, orange color with a viscous consistency. Chinese have used Myrrh in their medicine from ancient times through modern.

Historically, Myrrh was an integral part of religious ceremonies, embalming, and as a medical cure for all kinds of ancient (and modern day) diseases. Myrrh is also a beloved oil of perfumers as it extends the fragrance of other aromatics. There is good reason that Myrrh was offered as a gift to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords at the first Christmas

🏺WHAT IT DOES 🏺

Two primary active compounds are found in myrrh, called terpenoids and sesquiterpenes, both of which have powerful health effects, which promotes  healthy inflammatory response and fill the body with life-giving anti-oxidants. Sesquiterpenes specifically have an effect on our emotional center in the hypothalamus, helping us remain calm and balanced. Both of these compounds are under investigation for their health benefits, as well as other potential therapeutic uses.

Myrrh can help maintain healthy skin by soothing chapped or cracked patches. It is commonly added to skin care products to help with moisturizing and also for fragrance. Ancient Egyptians used it to prevent aging and maintain healthy skin. Myrrh is commonly used in aromatherapy for massages. It can also be added to a warm bath or applied directly to the skin

Bottled Up Inside

img_9213

Ever have waves of emotions as deep as the sea? Do you bottle things up or do you express your feelings and move on? I tend to be more of a bottler. I stuff and stuff until the bottle’s full and then I burst. .
😭
So this year is about learning the art of emotional RELEASE. Letting GO. Staying on top of the waves and not getting dragged under. I’m so blessed to have these aromatic oils to help me navigate my limbic system. .
🌊
There’s SCIENCE behind this stuff, guys, I’m not just making it up. Did you know that when we inhale aromatic oil molecules, the very first part of our brain that illuminates is our EMOTIONAL center??? It’s true!
🧠
Scientists are continually making new discoveries about the chemistry of emotions. Did you catch that? Our emotions are CHEMICALS that cause a physical reaction in our body! Essential oils work in our brain to create “happy” chemicals that produce positive physical reactions
👏
So what are you waiting for? Years of therapy, counseling, meditation, and other self-help methods have not achieved nearly the breakthroughs that have been seen in aromatherapy. PTSD, addictions, abuse survivors… aromatherapy is fast becoming the darling of the counseling professions. Why? BECAUSE IT WORKS
🤓
But don’t take my word for it. Try it for yourself!

NINGXIA RED

NingXia Red- Young Living

❤️ FUN FACTS ❤️

NingXia Red is one of Young Living’s most popular wellness supplements. It’s a nutrient-rich drink infused with antioxidant-providing superfruits and powerful essential oils. Ningxia gets its name from the province of China where the Chinese Wolfberry grows. This particular wolf berry is a dietary staple in this region, where natives live to be well over 100 years old! Wolfberry legends and recorded use in Chinese medicine goes back 5,000 years! There has been extensive research done on the chemistry and nutritional profile of the Ningxia Wolfberries. NingXia Red contains vital nutrients that may be missing or low in many modern diets and that could be the key to experiencing abundant wellness and energy.

❤️WHAT’S IN IT  ❤️

Did you know the antioxidant value in one cup of NingXia Red is equal to approximately:

•4 cups of purple grapes

•1 cup of wolfberries

•5 whole cherries

•½ cup blueberries

•75 pomegranate arils

•½ plum

•¼ cup aronia berries

❤️ WHAT IT DOES ❤️

So what are Antioxidants and why are they important? Antioxidants are nutrients that help fight the damaging effects that free radicals can cause in our bodies. Free Radicals have been linked to things like aging and illness. Every day our bodies go through a process called oxidation where unfortunately, free radicals can be produced. Have you ever seen a diced apple turn brown? This is a great example of the oxidation process. Free radicals can cause damage and can be accelerated by pollution, stress, toxins, smoking, and alcohol. Antioxidants are SO important, because they can help neutralize these damaging molecules.

Ningxia Red also contains the puree from the Ningxia wolfberry, a berry harvested in Northern China high in fiber and protein (it’s protein content is approximately 13%). The Wolfberry also contains all the essential amino acids, is high in antioxidants, and is the HIGHEST whole food source of potassium. Young Living is also unique in that we use the ENTIRE berry—the seeds, juice, peel, and fruit, as well as essential oils– Orange, Yuzu, Lemon, and Tangerine— to ensure that we offer a product that contains an optimal blend of ALL of it’s amazing nutrients.
