Valor- Young Living

Founder D. Gary Young was inspired to create Valor after he read texts about Roman soldiers that stated they would bathe in essential oils as part of a three-day ceremony to prepare for war. Valor was designed to to inspire feelings of courage, a life of full adventure, and an attitude to never stop growing!

This perfectly balanced blend brings 5 powerful oils together in harmony to create an uplifting, invigorating, and empowering experience.

This blend has been used to help empower the physical and spiritual man, to help us overcome fear and opposition, so that we can stand tall during adversity.  They are claimed to help build courage, confidence and self esteem while simultaneously bringing a feeling of calmness, peace and relaxation.

The oils in this blend are particularly effective in supporting the musculoskeletal system (especially the bones), the nervous system and emotional balance

⚡️ WHAT’S IN IT⚡️

  • BLACK SPRUCE– Black Spruce essential oil comes from Young Living’s pristine Northern Lights Farm in British Columbia, Canada. This oil has a woodsy and invigorating scent that is popular to use during meditation to create a fresh aromatic atmosphere. Black spruce trees have amazing resilience. They can withstand and even thrive in extremely harsh and cold environments. The oil grounds the body and helps to release emotional blocks
  • CAMPHOR WOOD– The original Valor formulation contained Rosewood oil, but when it was discovered that Rosewood was being over harvested in some parts of the world, Gary chose to be an industry leader in sustainability practices by reformulating with a more abundant species that offered the same benefits. Camphor trees are part of the evergreen family and can reach up to 40 meters in height and live to be more than 1,000 years old.
  • GERANIUM– This beautifully fragrant flower is native to south Africa and is famous for its comforting aroma that promotes feelings of inner peace and spiritual wellness. It includes the natural occurring constituents citronellol and geraniol and adds a hint of sweetness to the Valor blend. Geranium is often used to support the appearance of healthy-looking skin.
  • BLUE TANSY– With over 300 constituents, this is a very powerful and complex oil. Blue Tansy’s primary constituents are Sabinene, Camphor, Chamazulene and Pinene. Chamazulene is what gives Blue Tansy is dark, ink-like color and is also why Valor has a distinct blue color. Blue Tansy is a luxurious oil for the skin has a been used for thousands of years. Blue Tansy has long been used to support the liver and the lymphatic system as well as promoting a feeling of self control
  • FRANKINCENSE– In addition to elevated spiritual experiences, the benefits of Frankincense essential oil include maintaining radiant skin, connecting with your highest self, and promoting feelings of grounding and spiritual connectedness. Frankincense is often used to create a safe and comforting environment when diffused or inhaled. For this reason, the empowering presence of Frankincense is a popular addition to meditation and prayer practices. Frankincense has played an integral role in religious ceremonies for thousands of year

• Encourage a centered, balanced environment by diffusing.

• Inhale when you need an empowering, uplifting, and affirming aroma.

• Apply to wrists, base of neck, chest, or bottoms of feet before a big event, race, or presentation.

• If you’re feeling intimidated by a long to-do list, prep for your demanding day by rubbing Valor on your feet, hands, and neck or by diffusing it first thing in the morning.

• Use it as part of Young Living’s signature Raindrop Technique®

• Valor also makes a great woodsy-smelling cologne.

• Add several drops to steamy bath water for a calming aroma.

• Combine with V-6™ for a massage

Impulse to Soar

I love this picture of the hubs, circa 2008. We were invited to sit by the runway and watch him practice carrier landings. It was awesome!!!

But one thing I didn’t grasp until now was this idea- aviation is in his veins. Once he had circled the clouds like a bird, spanned the mountains & oceans from above, and lived beyond his wildest dreams, how could he ever walk the earth without soaring overhead in his mind?
As an earthbound misfit myself, I truly did not grasp why his eyes were always on the sky. Now I understand. It’s not just his eyes, it is his heart. Once you’ve experienced life from a different viewpoint, it’s impossible to not see things from a new perspective.
As a military family, we have lived a wildly adventurous life. We’ve been blessed to enjoy just a touch of the of this marvelous world- its beauty, its cultures, its people. How can we now be content with sitting still? How can we confine our lives to the parameters of mediocrity and feel fulfilled? Once you have learned to fly, how can you be content to creep?
Friends, we were made for more than just existing. We were put on this earth to connect with God- through His creation, through His people, and through our own increase. How can we expand our understanding by staying in one place, if we do the same things, if we live our life by the same repeated patterns?

The truth is, we can not be everything we were made to be by staying comfortable. Flying isn’t always comfortable. The jet breaks. There are emergencies. The fight is hard and the struggles are real. But that doesn’t mean you stay grounded.

Some circles preach contentment, but I’ve found that discomfort breeds creativity. Only those who are sufficiently dissatisfied with their current situation will seek to change it. Perhaps it’s a toxic relationship, or a job, or a habit you need to break. Perhaps its a positive change you need to embrace to be a better you. Everyone is going somewhere, this is a law of the universe. You are either moving forward or sliding backward- but nobody stays in one place. So what are you waiting for? Perhaps it’s time to spread your wings and fly! #perspectivechangeseverything

I remember all the words everyone said trying to console us. “I’m sorry, man, you guys didn’t deserve this,” was the invariably repeated theme. It’s what you tell someone when you don’t know what else to say.- when an injustice has been served with no explanation. After twenty-one years of exemplary service, my husband was let go from military service. No, he was not honorably or dishonorably discharged. He was passed over for promotion- TWICE- when all of his friends and peers were not.

We couldn’t understand it. The Marine Corps had invested (literally) $Millions of dollars into training him to fly fighter jets. He was well established in his command, loved by his fellow Marines, his record was as clean and his career as distinguished as any man’s could be. Nobody could figure it out. It made no sense.

It was utterly, grievously, and unforgivably unfair.

SO there we were. Packing a million boxes, with no particular order, saying goodbye to everything we loved. Our precious house. Our wonderful neighbors.  In one fell swoop we lost our church, our community, and our friends. My husband lost his brotherhood-in-arms. We had been living an enchanted life in Iwakuni, and I knew I would never see my beloved Japanese Mama-sans again.

To say we were crushed doesn’t even begin to describe it- broken, shattered, inconsolable might possibly come close.

Of course, every group had their platitudes. From the Christian circles, they all uttered meaningless phrases like, ” This wasn’t a surprise to God,” or “Everything happens for a reason!” as if that would make things better.  From our peers, we heard such banalities as, “I’m sorry to see you go,” or “it couldn’t have happened to a better Marine.” Theirs was better than the churchy response, but still cliche. But it was our friends, the ones who truly loved us (and saw us as being lucky to escape the Green Machine,) who said, “Now you are FREE to do whatever you want!”

Ahhhhhhh- freedom. At least there was a glimmer of hope in that!

Three long, lonely years later, I think we have finally caught a glimpse of what freedom means- all thanks to Young Living, but that’s a story for another day.

What we came to realize is this: Freedom is both electrifying and terrifying at the same time. Freedom is the willingness to walk out on the tightrope without a net. Freedom means steering your own course in life, even if it makes no sense. It means making illogical choices, walking in faith, and believing that there is more than what you can see, touch and feel. It means taking a risk, because the old adage really is true:

You see, when you lose your job unexpectedly, you are not free from your financial responsibilities. When you are living on an overseas military base, you are not free to stay in your home, or even in the host country. You are not free to use your savings account however you like, because you are forced to spend every dime getting back “home.” Of course, once you wash up on American shores, you are not free to move wherever you like, because someone charitable has to take you in. When someone charitable takes you in, you are not free to live how you normally would- your dog cannot pee on the grass, your car can not park in the drive, your children should be seen and not heard. In all your interviewing, you are not free to accept jobs that don’t offer enough pay to get you back on your feet. And when, eight months later, (after your welcome is way past worn out) a job offer finally comes, you are not free to say no. Even if it means spending six months in a Las Vegas trailer with no running water.

And then the paychecks started coming in. And then we bought a house- a really beautiful one, too! The job never got old, but it also never changed. The house never got decorated, but I never truly cared. The kids and I never made friends, so we never plugged in. We never had to mow. We never had to cook. We never spent time in the same room because our house was so big we didn’t have to. We never thought life “on the outside” of the military could be so dull. And we never felt, not for a moment, that we were truly FREE.

My husband and I wrestled extensively with this painfully elusive idea. We could not fathom the lunacy of our well-wishing friends, who truly believed we would be free outside the Marine Corps. To us, we certainly had not arrived at this mythical state- we were living an isolated urban existence in a city we didn’t like, far away from family and friends. Our beautiful home devoured the lion’s share of his income, so we couldn’t really afford to furnish it, or do all those DIY  projects we dreamed of. Although his job was a blessing, the weekends were not long enough to travel, so we spent our Saturdays doing what all weekend warriors do- cleaning the house, doing the laundry and gathering groceries. All the while we would ask each other, “Is this the freedom they spoke of?”

Am I speaking anybody’s language here? Did you wake up one day and realize what you thought would be a LIFE turned out to be merely an existence? Then hear me.

What do you DREAM about? What do you REALLY WANT? If you could do anything you imagined, no limitations- what would you do? What would you create? Where would you go? Who would you help?

You see, freedom is little more than a DECISION. TO. DO. THOSE. THINGS. Paint the canvas. Take the trip. Start the business. Write the book… What are you waiting for? Freedom only comes when you CHOOSE to break free! Set your course with intention, hold your dream on the screen of your mind and start believing in it with your whole heart. And then MOVE.

Take one step.

Then take another.

And another.

There is freedom in movement. Look at water as it rushes endlessly down hill. Consider birds as they circle through the air. The running of a Gazelle. The gathering of clouds. The orbiting of the planets. Nothing in nature STANDS STILL. So why are you?

Freedom requires perpetual motion. If you stumble, you must jump back up. If there are obstacles, you must maneuver around them. But through all the struggles and the hardships, you are fueled on by your own desires. Your eyes are fixed on the goal and the reward is in bringing it to bear.

Yes, freedom involves risk. There’s no better example than the Declaration of Independence. That traitorous document could have had many men hanged. But it sparked a tide of revolution that birthed our great nation. I, for one, am grateful that the founding fathers were willing to risk their necks!

So, in honor of all those sacrifices which have given us freedom, from the American Revolution to our friends still serving “on the inside,” we intend to prove that it CAN be done! There IS life outside the Green Machine, and not just the banal existence that most civilians have settled for.  We are not going to let a job dictate our life, but instead, we are going to let out life dictate our job. I can’t tell you what that will look like exactly. I can’t tell you exactly HOW it’s going to happen. But I can tell you that we are moving forward and taking a risk-  and even though from the outside it appears as though nothing has changed, the DECISION has been made, and there is tremendous freedom in THAT!

Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant

I wish there was an essential oil called Encouragement, because I would have been bathing myself in that stuff hourly.

We homeschool Mamas, need lots of encouragement. Buckets and buckets full, because we never know if what we’re doing is good enough.  All mothers, but homeschool moms in particular, suffer a fear of inadequacy beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.

It starts when they are little, we dream of our children being multilingual classical composers with a PhD in astrophysics. We throw ourselves into teaching them colors and numbers and letters… and then it’s reading and writing and oh my word… MATH. There’s history and science and literature, diagramming sentences and proper punctuation, Latin and Bible studies and poetry recitations.  There’s drawing and painting and piano lessons- but don’t forget about swim lessons and sports teams, and the food pyramid for healthy eating. They have to learn to brush their teeth, clean their rooms, feed the dog, wash their dishes… without me reminding them. But in between all that, they must learn to learn to buckle their seatbelt, tie their shoes, ride a bike…

…are you exhausted yet???

And that’s just the beginning.

Eventually we awaken to the sad truth that Johnny’s math skills aren’t as strong as the neighboring fourth grader. And he’s batting zero on that whole astrophysics thing. Not to mention, he positively HATES the piano and you never did get to all those language lessons you dreamed of… sigh.

Mamas, YOU 👏 ARE 👏 NOT 👏 ALONE!

Please please pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease hear me when I say what you are doing IS ENOUGH! In truth, it is probably too much. They need our love, they need our wisdom. They need our gentle guidance- they do NOT need the multiplication tables at age four!

I wish I’d had an older, wiser mama so I could sit at her feet and have her tell me this. I wish I’d had someone to point to her own happy, thriving, adult children and tell me to take a deep breath, that everything was going to turn out FINE. She would gently laugh at my self-inflicted stress and wisely remind me that it’s their character that matters, not their knowledge. As mothers, our job is to train their hearts, to teach them to walk in truth, not to walk in the fear of man. But the system outside our sheltered little schoolroom is, in fact, dictated by the fear of man, so we exhaust ourselves to prove we can meet and exceed the world’s standards.

Well, I did not have that older, wiser woman, so Mamas, let ME be that voice to you!

My children are in high school. To me, their inevitable departure, out from under my wings feels like staring down the barrel of a gun. It’s like being tied to a railroad and hearing the train whistle, feeling the rustling tracks. MY TIME IS ALMOST OVER. My job is almost done. I’ve run with endurance the race set before me, and I honestly wish the finish line wasn’t nearly so close.

What I wouldn’t give to take back all those frustrating French lessons and just snuggle them on my lap with a Bible story. To share in their pure delight as they hang homemade ornaments on the lowest boughs of Christmas Tree, or to sing bedtime lulabys as they drift off to seep. I can’t remember the last time I sang a bedtime song. It’s not like there’s a precise moment when you say to yourself, “This is the last song I will ever sing,” but one day you will not sing to your children again. And just like that- the season changes.

Please hear my heart- there will be days when you feel overwhelmed, tired, and downright discouraged. The world will always be in your ear telling you you have to run faster, jump higher, do more. But what good is a set of academic standards, measurements and norms if we lose their hearts in the process?

Stay the course, mama. What you are doing is RIGHT, and GOOD. You have sacrificed career, self- satisfaction, time and even some friendships… but you have made the most precious investment that any person could ever make- in your children.

Believe me, the time will come when you start to see dividends on that investment. As they get older, the more return you will see. First, the kids on the playground will not entice your kids into nefarious behavior. Then your relatives will be impresesed by their  sense of responsibility. The boss at their first job will applaud their good attitude and work ethic.  Your friends, whose teenageers want nothing to do with them, will look longingly at your dinner table conversations and wonder how you did it.

I PROMISE YOU- this day will come!

So if you are feeling discouraged, grab your bottle of Valor, or Hope, or Joy. Take a moment and breathe in the uplifting fragrance of Bergamot, Sacred Mountain, Frankincense or Orange. Inhale Cedarwood over and over and tell yourself,  “Well done, Mama.” Because when you are faithful in the little things, when you have been entrusted with a treasure and you have guarded it well,  those are the words you will hear spoken to you. Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done.

Discover Your Purpose

If this isn’t what life’s journey is about, I don’t know what is.🤷🏻‍♀️

Nobody could have ever told me that I would be a stay-at-home military wife, homeschooling two boys. I wouldn’t have listened. 🙇🏻‍♀️

If someone had predicted that I would move 12 times in 15 years (twice overseas and twice into an RV) I would have laughed them out of the room! Not this girl! I had goals and aspirations- none of which was to stay at home wiping little noses, teaching abc’s and hanging broken picture frames in government-issued housing! 🙅🏻‍♀️

But God had different plans- and those plans come with twists and turns, mountains and huge valleys, trials and triumphs.🎢

If I’d had my dream career, I would have never spent four glorious years in Japan. 🇯🇵

I would never have discovered that simple living suits me far better than the palatial home of my dreams. 🚐

I would never have understood the richness of community, the depth of gratitude towards our service members, the appreciation of foreign cultures, the passion for travel… ✈️

Had I not married a Marine, I might never have loved as generously, lost as deeply, prayed as fervently as a military wife is known to do. 🙏🏻

If I’d had my dream career, I would have been too busy to savor the precious and fleeting moments of my children’s youth. If I’d had life my way, I would have missed so much of what really matters in life.
Through all this time, through all the hardships and sacrifice, through all the dreams and ambitions that have fallen by the wayside- I have not found myself.  Thank God- I have found who I was meant to be. And it’s something far better than anything I could have imagined.

Forward Motion

I’m one of those people who can’t sit and do “nothing.”

🙄Don’t take me to a beach and expect me to lay in the sun and relax. 🏖 I’ll be up and down a thousand times. I’ll be walking it’s length, picking up seashells, reorganizing the space under the umbrella… (true story)

🏰 Don’t take me to Europe and expect me to sit for hours in a cafe, when there are countless streets to walk, corners to turn, people to meet, pictures to take.

📲If you see me sitting on my phone, I’m not playing Candy Crush (is that still a thing?) I’m editing photos, movies, stories… making notes for future classes, planning, learning, DOING!

📚 I travel with books because I hate watching movies on the plane. There is always something more to read and learn!

💺And you don’t want to sit in the seat next to me because I’ll be wiggling and squirming like a four year old if my brain isn’t entertained!

👯‍♀️ That being said, I do waste plenty of time in my own way. I’m super social- I love my amazing friends and I love pouring time into relationship. I can chat over the fence for hours. Keep up a text thread like you wouldn’t believe. Lunch date? I’m IN! Let’s socialize!
As a blue and yellow personality, I find myself spinning in circles quite often. As a creative, my mind is always engaged in the next project (even if this one’s not finished!) As a mom, homeschooler, business owner, wife & teacher, my thoughts are constantly occupied. Don’t be surprised if you have to say my name several times before I hear you- and if the name you use is “Mom” you may need to also jump around and wave your arms
I’m a firm believer that the time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time, but there is a difference between being passive with your time and being actively engaged – It’s all about forward motion.

Are you growing that relationship?

Are you discussing new ideas?

Are you refining your gifts and talents?

Or are you sitting in one place?

👉 It doesn’t matter if you are career-minded or domestic, amateur or professional, high-energy or slow and methodical. Just. Keep. Moving. Forward.

There is infinitely more satisfaction in activity rather than passivity. So what are you waiting for?

Grab your En-R-Gee essential oil, your Motivation, or mix it up with Peppermint and Rosemary… these are very energizing, stimulating oils. Throw some in your diffuser! Apply it on the back of your neck, take a deep inhale from the bottle… and get moving!!!! You will be sooo glad you did!

It’s Not Too Late

I’ve heard it said that, as parents, we only have 19 summers with our kids before they leave the nest. The days are long, but the years are short, and to me, 19 was a sobering number.
Our family is headed into summer 16 with our oldest, and looking back, I have no idea where the time went! All I know is, we intend to make the most of what’s left.

Teens need their parents more than ever in these volatile years. This is not the time to throw up your hands and give in to the tides of culture. We need to stop promoting the idea that it’s natural for every teen to shut themselves in their room with headphones on, hating their family. ⠀⠀
The teen years are a critical time for relationship. As parents, we must transition from training and disciplining to coaching. We must elevate them to an adult level, while gently steering them with wisdom and grace. It’s not an easy balance, but it is possible with focus and intention. ⠀⠀
Wherever you are in your parenthood journey, it is not too late! Turn off the noise- the TV shows, Netflix, YouTube, Instagram. Turn on some music and start having conversations. You will be amazed at what you learn about your kids! They are deep thinkers who need to know that you HEAR THEM. But remember, in order to truly hear, we have to LISTEN!!!
The time to start is NOW- cultivate that dialogue with your child. Listen more than you speak. Instruct them in righteousness when they are NOT in error, and when they make mistakes, don’t condemn. The goal is to win their hearts, not to rule over them.  :)
We only have 19 summers with the most precious gift God can give us. Let’s make every moment count!

Break out your Believe oil, or Gathering, and gently but deeply allow the aroma to penetrate your mind and your heart. You CAN have a healthy relationship with your teen. Choose to believe it. Gather in those negative emotions and hold every thought captive to Christ.  You’ve got this.

Now Is Our Time

There are so many people out there seemingly living such beautiful lives… traveling to exotic places, climbing El Capitan, performing on stage, succeeding wildly at a business venture… doing things that causes the world to take notice and give applause. Good for them!
And then there’s the rest of us. With dishes in the sink, laundry to fold, too many things on the calendar, none of which are more exciting than a dentist appointment… is it just me?
Life is made up of all the little moments in between the laundry folding and the trips to the dentist. It’s the conversations in the car and tucking my kids in to a freshly made bed. It’s taking the dog for a walk, pouring a cup of coffee, sitting down to a meal together… and of course, doing the dishes.

There are imperfections, hardships, struggles. Something breaks, money is tight, someone’s health is failing. Marriages unravel, children disobey, jobs come to an end… this is life. And it’s not always pretty
But in between the big moments of chaos are always little moments of peace- something to laugh about, something beautiful to see, a pause, a stillness. And THOSE are the moments that define the times, if we can see them. .🤔
For me, the past three years have been full of the “asphalt and concrete of life”- both literally and figuratively- it hasn’t been very pretty. But always there were cracks in the sidewalk where something small and beautiful has grown.
If you are going through a less than beautiful patch of life right now, if you feel like there’s nothing but asphalt as far as you can see, remember, It only takes a decade for a forest to reclaim a city.
So grab your Acceptance, Gathering or Gratitude oil, and let the uplifting aroma wash over you. Breathe deeply and feel your frustration melt away.  There may have been beautiful times behind you, and there will certainly be more beautiful times ahead, but where you are Right Now-

THIS time is yours.

What’s Your Art?

Photography is the art of observation. It has little to do with the things we see and everything to do with the way we see them!
I believe God made every single person to be deeply creative. THAT MEANS YOU!!! If He is the great Creator of the universe, and we are made in His image, then what does that make us?

You, my friend, are a creator. Perhaps photography isn’t your gig. But maybe you can whip up a gourmet meal, crochet quilts, or tell a story that moves people to tears. Maybe you can sing, or dance, or motivate others to action. Maybe you are a teacher, a scientist, a thinker, a communicator… a business builder… it’s not about the things you see, but HOW you see them

Your perspective IS your gift! You see the world in a way that others don’t! Whether it’s through the microscope, or a telescope, a piano or a typewriter… YOU have something beautiful and unique to share!
Stop believing that your perspective isn’t interesting. Stop comparing your form of creativity to others.

Stop 👏putting👏 yourself 👏down!

Grab yourself some Envision essential oil, or Believe, or Awaken… take a deeeeeeeeeeeep inhale from the bottle, close your eyes and let your mind wander to those creative endeavors in your life. Inhale again. Think about yourself as a creator. Inhale again. Picture your art form, your gifts, your talents.

💋I want to hear from every person who reads this post- whether you are an accountant or a trapeze artist- how are you creative??? Tell me in the comments below!
