Originating from the mint family, clary sage was famous during the Middle Ages for its ability to help clear eye problems, This earned it the name “Clear Eyes.” A perennial in the genus Salvi, and its scientific name is salvia sclarea, it is considered to be one of the top essential oils for hormones.


Widely used for female issues, kidney support, digestive aid and skin enhancers, clary sage affects the hormones, or endocrine system. Clary sage affects the hormones of the body because it contains natural phytoestrogens, which are referred to as “dietary estrogens” that are derived from plants and not within the endocrine system. These phytoestrogens give clary sage the ability to cause estrogenic effects. It regulates estrogen levels and ensures the long-term health of the uterus — reducing the chances of uterine and ovarian cancer.

A lot of health issues today, even things like infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome and estrogen-based cancers, are caused from excess estrogen in the body — in part because of our consumption of high-estrogen foods. Because clary sage helps balance out those estrogen levels, it’s an incredibly effective essential oil.

Clary sage works to regulate the menstrual cycle by balancing hormone levels naturally and helps to alleviate typical pre-menstrual conditions. It has been used effectively in balancing mood as it has been shown to reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels upon to 36%. It also helps with sleep, supports healthy circulation and blood pressure levels,

A study was done of over 8,000 women in labor, and the aromatic benefits of clary sage demonstrated significant effectiveness at lowering maternal anxiety, fear and even pain during labor.  Another study showed clary sage’s remarkable power to soothe menstrual conditions in women


Apply on location for support

Diffuse or inhale for a calming effect

Add a couple drops to your favorite moisturizer

Inhale or diffuse for better focus

Apply to the feet at night for restful sleep

Add a few drops to a relaxing bath

Apply to pulse points or on the wrists

Inhale several times deeply to stimulate the mind and jog your memory

Apply on lower back for comfort and support during menstrual cycle

Apply over abdomen for menstrual comfort

Apply over stomach and bowls to enhance digestion

Add to night time lotion and apply over the legs

Add a few drops directly to the scalp or into your shampoo

put a drop on cuts or scrapes to speed healing

Rub over chest with carrier oil for respiratory support

Add a drop to your daily face moisturizer
